Feeling groggy in the morning or hitting an afternoon slump can be challenging. Fortunately, somatic exercises can help you wake up and boost your energy levels within minutes. At NEUROFIT, we've found that these exercises can significantly improve your nervous system's balance, making you feel more alert and motivated. Here are three powerful somatic exercises that can help you wake yourself up in 3 minutes or less.

Why Somatic Exercises Work

Somatic exercises focus on the mind-body connection, helping you become more aware of physical sensations and release tension stored in your muscles.

By engaging the nervous system through specific movements and breathing patterns, you can quickly shift from a state of grogginess to one of alertness and energy. This approach is especially effective because 80% of the nerves in the body are afferent, meaning they carry information from the body to the brain.

Somatic exercises are an excellent way to re-balance the nervous system, shifting from a dysregulated stress state to one of the three regulated states at the top of the NEUROFIT Ring:

The NEUROFIT Ring shows the six possible nervous system states, and the transitions between them.

1. Body Tapping

Body tapping is a simple yet effective way to stimulate your nervous system, wake up your body, and improve mental clarity in the morning. This exercise involves tapping different parts of your body to increase circulation and bring awareness to various muscle groups.

Body Tapping - Body tapping with balled fists to bring oneself back into the body.

Start by standing or sitting comfortably.

Use your balled fists to gently tap your chest, moving outwards towards your arms and legs.

Focus on areas that feel tense or sore.

Tap firmly but not painfully, taking deep breaths as you do so.

Continue for about 2-3 minutes, allowing yourself to become more alert with each tap.

Body tapping is excellent for improving mind-body awareness, and can quickly shift your focus to the present moment, reducing grogginess and promoting mental clarity.

2. Standing Breath of Fire

Standing Breath of Fire is a highly energizing exercise that uses rapid, rhythmic breathing to activate your nervous system. This exercise is particularly effective for cutting through morning brain fog or an afternoon slump, making you feel more awake and alert.

Standing Breath of Fire - Powerful breathing technique to quickly increase energy in the body.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, arms either down at your side or above your head for a challenge.

Take powerful breaths through your nose, snapping your lower belly and navel in on each exhale and relaxing your abdominal muscles on each inhale.

Place more emphasis on the out-breaths, making them audible.

Start with slow breaths, and increase the speed as feels comfortable to you.

Continue this practice for a few minutes, then relax and notice the difference in how your body feels.

By activating both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, this exercise helps to shift your body into a high-energy Play state, speeding up your heart rate and blood flow, and sending more oxygen to your brain to wake you up in minutes.

3. Tree Shaking

Tree Shaking involves rhythmic movements to shake out stored tension from the nervous system. It's an excellent exercise for waking your body up after long periods of inactivity or sitting.

Tree Shaking - A shaking exercise to release arm and shoulder tension.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.

Bring your arms above your head and shake them around.

Breathe steadily in and out through your nose, picking up the pace of your breathing to enhance the effect.

Continue this practice for a few minutes, keeping your arms above your shoulders as much as possible, and noticing the tension dissolve from your body and your mental clarity improving.

This exercise can help shift the body out of stagnation or shutdown into a more activated Play State, making you feel more awake and alert.
